Welcome Students.
I hope you find this blog informative in helping you achieve your goals in becoming a better typist. It is also my hope that in the time we spend together, you will not only become faster, but more proficient too!
So, you might ask me, Ms. L., "Why should I improve my typing? "
Well, there are many reasons. Computers, tablets, netbooks, laptops, name it - they’re everywhere and they aren’t going away anytime soon. They have replaced many of the tasks that we used to perform with a pen and a pad of paper. Everything from sending emails, writing reports, and taking online quizzes is done digitally. Do you know how improving your typing could help you with these tasks?
Let me start with 3 real benefits:
1. Saves Time
Who wouldn't want to save time taking notes in class, writing a paper or collaborating with peers in a shared document?
It can be so frustrating to hunt and peck for the correct keys. By the time you find them, you might forget what you heard or miss something you needed to remember. Yikes. What a dilemma. Just imagine: If you could type faster, you would be able to get your work done faster and have more free time for yourself.
2. Improves Focus
On the same note, think about every time you have to look at the keyboard to find the right key. Or, maybe you find yourself constantly making mistakes and having to go back and make corrections as you type.
Each time this happens, it breaks your focus and you become distracted. Using the correct fingers consistently helps you rely on motor memory rather than sight to type, thus freeing you up to direct your focus on the screen rather than on the keyboard.
In other words, you train your brain to trust your fingers. This is exactly like learning how to ride a bike. And, keep in mind, the more you can trust your fingers, the more accurate and faster you become over time.
3. Improves Body Posture
For all the time you are on the computer, it is very easy to get into wrong physical habits. You could set yourself up for achy shoulders, stiff neck, and even develop carpal tunnel syndrome. So, sit up straight, follow correct hand positions, look straight at your monitor and do not bang on the keys. This will prepare you for success and less physical stress.
Remember: Learning to type correctly isn’t just about increasing your typing speed and reducing errors, it’s about adopting healthy computer habits to reduce the risk of injury and provide increased comfort. It's just like learning to shoot the basketball correctly so you can improve your odds of scoring for the team. It's all about form and consistency.
I've embedded the video " Six Secret Keyboarding Techniques" I shared in class. Please watch whenever you feel you want to review the advice. Happy Typing!!
